Travel Tips: Packing Checklist

For our summer trip, we plan to bring smaller suitcases. I wish this wasn't the case but it is. We will be using the trains throughout our vacation and lugging around a huge suitcase does not sound fun at all. We could take the plane from one city to the other, not only will this be faster and cheaper, it will be more convenient too. But we want to see the countryside, not just the major cities, using the train will give us a different perspective for each country. We are not in any time constraint so we can schedule our time and have a leisurely travel.

Amber will have her own backpack and is old enough to hold her own suitcase, a hard-sided neon blue carry-on. That should take care of her clothes and stuff while Tyler will have his own backpack for his books and toys.

For this trip, I have to downsize on the number of clothes we will be bringing with us. A week's worth of clothes is enough for hubby and I and some extra for the kids. I want to bring some gifts for friends that we will be visiting on our trip. Since luggage space will be a premium, I am thinking of mailing all of it to my college barkada in Trier. If Germany was our first stop, then it would not be a problem to bring it with us. But it isn't, we will be flying into Rome, Italy and will not get into Trier until the third week of our trip.

I plan to bring a large duffle bag with us, just in case we need some space for souvenirs. Wait, let me rephrase that: I plan to bring a large duffle bag for ALL the souvenirs I will be purchasing in each city we visit. LOL

I will also print out address labels, just peel and stick to the postcards. It will save us a lot of time instead of writing the addresses on each and every postcard.

Anyway, I have this list that I print out every time I pack for a trip. I got it from Good Housekeeping. This is saved as a WORD file on my documents folder and I edit and print as needed.

Did I forget anything? Please let me know if there are other things that I need to add to this list. :)

My Desktop

Thanks to Laura and Janet for this tag. :)

This is what's on the desktop of my Dell XPS notebook. I love this photo of the Aurora Borealis, I want to see it for myself someday. I also have the Google desktop gadgets on the side. This is customizable so it's fun changing it often just like the Virtual Flower Pot which has to be watered or it will end up dead. :)

Photoshop Express aka Adobe Photoshop for Free...

Yeah, I know, sounds too good to be true, doesn't it? It's kinda true. LOL So, what is it?
It is called Adobe Photoshop Express. It's a web-based version of Adobe Photoshop which means you do not download anything to your computer. All you need to do is register (for free). You upload your photos, use the editing tools, share it with friends and family and store your photos online.

The full version of Adobe Photoshop is complicated for some users, this Photoshop Express version is easier to learn. More or less, this is just like Photobucket or Shutterfly.

Right now, this beta version is only available for US users. I'm sure it'll be available for the rest of the world soon enough.

Summer Vacation Update2

I have not updated for days now. :( I have been busy planning for our summer trip to Europe. I just purchased our train tickets for the trip yesterday, Eurail has a promotion that will give one extra travel day if you get tickets by the end of this month. I chose the 10-day Eurail 5 country Select Pass (for Italy, Switzerland, France, Benelux(Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg count as one) and Germany). With the ongoing promotion, we have 11 travel days total (2 extra travel days if we decide to divert from our planned itinerary).

Since Tyler is 3 years old on the first day of our train travel, he can ride for free if sitting on a parent's lap. We opted to get him his own seat. He is big for his age so it will be uncomfortable for hubby and me if he does not have his own seat. We chose to travel First class all through out Europe. Since we will be spending a considerable amount of time on the trains, I think it will be worth the extra cost for comfort. I'd rather be comfortable with less money than be miserable with extra cash. :)

Easter Traditions

Happy Easter!

Easter is one of my kid's favorite holidays, mainly because of the Easter Egg Hunt. Of course I also tell them about the importance of this day in our Catholic religion. It makes me proud everytime Amber tells me about 'religious' things she learned in school. This is the reason why we enrolled her in a Catholic school even if it means a lot of financial sacrifice on our part. We want our kids to grow up with a solid religious background. We believe that religion should be a big part of their lives.

Anyway, we started our Easter tradition yesterday by coloring Easter eggs. Amber and Tyler enjoy this activity very much. Amber was also able to do this in school last Wednesday and Thursday they had an egg hunt with the other students.
We always have a family egg hunt in the house or in our backyard, depending on the weather. My in-laws just came back from wintering in Florida the other day so they will have the egg hunt next weekend.

Tonite, we will have our family Easter dinner. I will be making Prime Rib with Au Jus, scalloped potatoes, steamed green beans and rice pilaf. For desert, I plan to bake a coconut cream pie.

How about you, do you have any Easter family traditions you'd like to share?

Charity or Scam?

I was at the parking lot of the grocery store with Amber and I was putting all the bags at the back of the SUV. An older woman approached us, she was in her late 50's - 60's. She was wearing a light blue rain parka and holding a purse. Before she approached us, I saw her talking to another woman in the parking lot.

She asked me if I can spare some money for her to get some gas. She said that she needs to go to Somerset but ran out of gas. She also mentioned that someone gave her some change and she needs a couple of dollars. At that moment, I was asking myself what I should do. Should I give her the benefit of the doubt or should I tell her 'no'?

I've already been a victim of a scam many years ago when hubby and I were still dating. He drove me home and after we went in the house, there was a knock on the door. A man in a wheelchair was at the door and asking us if he can borrow some money to get some colostomy bags from the pharmacy. He proceeded to tell us that he will leave us his eyeglasses and will return with the money. Hubby gave him $20 since we didn't have any change. Sad to say he did not return. :(

This afternoon, I was in the same predicament. What to do now? Something inside of me said to just give her the money, give her the benefit of a doubt.
I only have $5 in my wallet at the time. I wanted to get $2 lottery ticket at the store but the person at the counter was busy talking on the phone so we left. :(
Now this woman is asking me for money. I told myself that it's just money and money can be made (kailangan ko nga lang tumunganga sa harap ng computer para makapamingwit ng op LOL), that I should give it to her and just hope for the best.

So that is what I did. I gave her my $5. I cannot say that I felt happy for doing it. I guess it's because of my past experience. Until now, I cannot help thinking about her and my decision. I just hope that she really needed help. If it turns out that she's a crook, then there's one thing that she cannot run away from and that is karma. As for myself, I'm just glad that I am able to help out another person, didn't they say that you get tenfold what you give? So I am expecting to get $50 anytime soon. LOL

If this happened to you, what would you have done?

*UPDATE*
I found this article online today. :)

Disgusting Bugs...

Yesterday when I was looking for some egg noodles to use for Pancit, I saw some bugs with the noodles inside the plastic bag. This grossed me out, I still get goosebumps thinking about it. This is the only time I've seen them in my pantry. I was puzzled, I did not know how it got there. I threw away the bag, noodles and all. I then went through all the different noodles in the pantry and found that all are clean and bug-free except one bag that has the same problem. Lo and behold, it is the same brand of noodles. The egg noodles that I bought from the store already has the bugs inside the package, how disgusting is that. UGGGHHH!

So beware of the dried noodles you buy from the store. You never know when it has some FREE stuff that comes with it. :)

My Kids

I cannot imagine what my life will be without my two kids. I knew even when I was younger that I want to have my own family. I still remember the day when we found out I was pregnant with Amber, that was the happiest day of my life. Now we have two children, a girl and a boy. If I married earlier, I would probably have one more child. My pregnancies were not a walk in the park, I had complications during my last trimester with both Amber and Tyler. I was induced both times and they were both premature. That was not a problem though since they now are both normal and healthy kids.

Amber is now a 3rd grader at St. Marys Catholic school where she is an A+ student. Tyler meanwhile, will start pre-school at the same school this coming school year. Now that they will be both in school, I need to find something to do during that time frame. I cannot go back to work full-time because of their schedule, school ends at 2:30pm. I'll have to look into either working part-time or do some work-at-home jobs since my former job only offers full-time employment.

Sacrificing my career to raise my children has never been an issue for me. Children grow up so quickly and I want to be there during their formative years and then some. I have been a SAHM mom for 9 years now and let me tell you, it is all WORTH IT!

Summer Vacation Update1

Well, I finally did it! I booked our flights to Europe this morning. There's no backing now, actually we can since the tickets are refundable but we won't. :) We will fly out of Boston to Rome, Italy with a stop at London Heathrow. From there, we will take the train to go to other destinations. For our train reservations, we chose the Global Pass at Eurail.com. This is valid for all countries that is a part of Euro Rail.

I've also booked all our hotels for the trip. I relied heavily on Frommers.com and TripAdvisor.com, they have hotel ratings and reviews from travellers. Instead of booking through travel sites, I booked directly with the hotel. It gave us more options doing this, we were able to get just one room for the four of us instead of the suggested two rooms when booking through the online travel booking sites.

Now, I need to plan our sightseeing in each city and book some city tours as well. I really want to see Pope Benedict say mass so I made sure that we are in Rome on a Wednesday. This is the day where they have the Papal Blessing at St. Peter's square. Dh already agreed to it, it's only an hour but it will be worth the trouble dealing with crowds.

The Letter 'I'

Thanks to Butchay for this tag. :)
*warning* I obviously wrote this while distressed, pagpasensyahan nyo po ako. I just need to vent.
I AM… a wife and a mom
I WANT…a vacation.
I HAVE…all that I want - my family
I WISH…peace (para akong nasa pageant ano? LOL)
I HATE…M for what she has done to me and my friends
I FEAR…thunderstorms
I SEARCH…for good deals everytime I shop
I WONDER…why some people are so needy and always want attention
I REGRET…knowing and meeting M
I LOVE…Haagen Daas Dulce de Leche
I ALWAYS…check my back, worried that M stabbed me na-naman!
I AM NOT…going to let M hurt me again, being back-stabbed once is more than enough
I DANCE…when I hear some good music
I SING…the Alphabet song with Tyler
I CRY…when I watch a sad love story
I WRITE…my grocery lists so I won't forget it
I WON…$5 on the lottery (gusto nyo ng balato? LOL)
I AM CONFUSED…as to the reason why M would not leave us alone, hmm, I remember, it's because she is needy and wants attention.
I NEED…her out of my life
I SHOULD…say a prayer for her since she obviously need some proper guidance
THE LAST THOUGHT I GO TO SLEEP WITH IS….thank God I found out what kind of person she is...a wolf in sheep's clothing. I'm also glad people found out for themselves what kind of person she is. Good luck and good riddance...

I'm tagging Amor, Janet, Michelle and Laura

Featured Friends

My friend Mareng Amy featured me in one of her 5 "picks" of the week. Merci Madame Amy. :)

When you feature your friends' blogs, you will help increase (hopefully) their page rank and yours. You can read more on this here and here. So if you want to help friends, keep the ball rolling, make your own 5 featured friends and keep them for 1 week. To return the favor, include the link or name of the person who has featured you.

Example:
1. Mareng Lan is one of my featured friends.
2. So when Mareng Lan will make her featured friends for the week, she has to include my name and she will pick 4 more from her own list of friends.
3.She will inform ALL her featured friends to keep the ball rolling.

If you use Blogger, you can add your featured friends using the new page element 'Link List'.

My Featured Friends Blogs are:
rel=”nofollow”Lanie's My Online Diary
Mira's Web Journal
Amy's Kalidadis

A Very Sad News

I felt sad when I read that Patrick Swayze has Pancreatic Cancer. His publicist released a statement that Patrick might only have a few weeks to live. Usually, patients who are diagnosed with this kind of cancer have only a couple of months to live. I hope he is the exception.
