The Amazing Race Season 13

I was happy that The Amazing Race started its 13th season last Sunday. I've been an avid watcher of TAR right from the start. I love this reality show. Project Runway and Top Chef comes close. I love this show because I like to see different places from other parts of the world. I've always been fascinated other cultures. I remember in 4th grade, my favorite subject was Social Studies because I learned about countries and people around the world. I was lucky that I was able to travel abroad when I was a teenager. I wanted my kids to share my love of travel and I was able to do that when we went to Europe last summer. It was great seeing my kids saying "thank you" in Italian, Deutsch and French. The only time I get disappointed when watching TAR is when one of the contestants act ignorant and criticize the people and the city they are in. Other than that, I enjoy it. What can I say, this is my guilty pleasure. :o)

Watch Out for My Christmas Photo Cards

Yes, it is that time of year. I need to choose photos for the family Christmas card. I've been sending photo cards for Christmas ever since we had our daughter. Most of my extended family lives in the other side of the country and the world so this is one of the ways they get to see my kids. It can get expensive especially when you have tons of families and friends so I am always looking for discounts wherever I can find it. I saw the website of VistaPrint.com and liked their design choices and variety of finishes to choose from. You can either choose the regular Glossy Finish or for added small fee, you can get Linen Finish. They have different kinds of photo cards: Photo Folded Cards, 4x8 Photo cards, Holiday Collage cards and Foil Accented Photo cards. I especially liked the Holiday Collage cards, you can have up to 6 photos on it. This is perfect if you have a hard time choosing which photos to use. You also have the option to upload your own card design, that is great for artists out there. They also have what I am looking for, a coupon that I can use for my Christmas photo cards. Just enter the coupon code: XmasFree and you will get 10 Free Holiday Cards. Visit www.VistaPrint.com for your Holiday photo cards this year.

Turning My Brown Thumb Green

If I rate my general gardening skills, I would rate it a 4 or a 5. Now if I rate my indoor gardening skills, then it would be a lowly 1. I don't have a lot of indoor plants, it just dies on me after a couple of months. The only indoor plant that survives in my house are those immersed in water. Could that be a clue as to why my plants are dying? Hmm.
So the plants shown here are my new guinea pigs, if you will. We got these from a club store. The one on the left is called a Yucca Cane while the one on the right is called a Money Tree. The Yucca Cane is rated 'tolerant' while the Money Tree is rated 'resilient'. We will see about that. The plants came with a tag and instructions on how to care for it. So I've been watering it once a week and placed it in the part of the house that gets the most sunlight. I still need to transfer the Yucca plant to a bigger pot. The Money Tree meanwhile, looks like it should be fine in the decorative pot it came with. So now I just wait and see. Cross your fingers and wish me luck!

My Parents and Retirement

My parents are in their seventies are living in Southern California. Being retired, they live on a fixed income. They are seriously considering living in the Philippines for a part of the year. With the state of the economy these days, I think that it is a good idea. The cost of living there is much lower and they will have less expenses since the house is fully paid for. My parents are just waiting for my brother's petition to be finalized, so we hope he will be here soon since he's only waiting for the final approval from the US Embassy. My dad is also a believer in having a life insurance so he called me and ask me to look into life insurance rates for my brother. They own their house in California but this is a bad time to sell, he is hoping the real estate prices will go up again.

This is the house I grew up in. My parents had this house built when I was seven years old and I lived here until my early twenties after which, I migrated here in the U.S. Today, only my bachelor cousin who is a lawyer lives here. My parents did not want to sell this house even though there are people who want to buy it. It certainly holds a lot of good memories for all of us. My dad plans to have the house remodeled before they go back. He wants to convert the maids' quarters on the first floor into their bedroom and make it bigger by extending it to a part of the kitchen. He also wants to put air conditioning to the rest of the house since currently, only the bedrooms upstairs have it. My dad is already complaining of the expenses but I told him he will still save money in the long run.

Have you Ingested Melamine?

It's all over the news. Tainted milk have sickened thousands in China. Now there is a recall for White Rabbit candies here in the US and Cadbury chocolates in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Australia. These candies were manufactured in China and could contain melamine-laced milk, which has been blamed for killing four children and making around 50,000 ill.
I like White Rabbit candies. I ate a lot of it when I was younger. Good thing I haven't had it for years or else I would've been worried. This is alarming. How can we be sure that the food products we are buying that are made in China are safe? I guess we shouldn't purchase any products with dairy that is made from China until after this problem is completely solved.

Searching for Someone?

With the help of the internet, people looking for family members, past loves or even dead-beat parents now find it easy to get information. Unlike several years ago where you have to hire a private investigator, all you need is an internet connection and you can search various databases. Almost all these services however requires a fee and it does not come cheap. The good news is that there is a free people search engine available. Yes, you read that right, you do not have to pay any fee. This web site, www.LookupWho.com does not require you to pay for any searches. All you need is the person's name and state and it will provide you information that is available for that person. Currently, this service searches for people in the United States and Canada. Looking for Ways to Save $

Everyone it seems are looking for ways to save money these days. With the winter months coming up, we need to look for ways to effectively heat up our homes. As I mentioned in my previous post, Getting Ready for Winter, we will be installing a cast iron non-catalytic wood stove. This will go in our existing fire place and will save us $ in heating oil. You can also save on energy costs by installing Energy Star energy efficient
lighting fixtures in your house. Using appliances that has an energy star rating will also save you $. I've been using a washer and dryer that is older than my daughter. Our next project will be to replace that with an energy efficient unit. Everything will cost money at first but it will save you more in the long run.

What a Stormy Day

We received more than two inches of rain. Boy, did it rain. It rained cats and dogs. The rain in the afternoon was worse and it was at its' heaviest when the kids got out of school. You can imagine parents, grandparents and kids trying hard not to get wet. Driving was difficult and add that to the fact that there were crazy drivers on the road. Haven't they heard of 'hydroplaning'? Dh called from the office and suggested for us to skip my daughter's gymnastic class last night. She was disappointed, of course but driving conditions were just awful. It's still raining today and from what I've seen in the news, will continue on and off until Monday. :o(

The Best Way to See New York City

I remember visiting New York City on my honeymoon and everything was overwhelming. The skyscrapers, people everywhere, cars and lack of parking. I told my husband that the next time we visit the city, to leave the car and just hire charter bus nyc. They provide transportation around New York city from 9 to 57 passengers. This will be perfect for when my relatives from California come visit. We can concentrate on having fun and seeing the sights and leave the driving and all it entails to someone else. NYCBusCharters.com also offers day trips from New York City to Boston, Philadelphia, Atlantic City and Washington D.C. They have well-maintained and clean vehicles and are always on time. Their drivers are courteous, experienced and your satisfaction is their main goal. They also provide shuttle service to the airports in the area, to any amusement parks and other transportation needs that you may have. Using a transportation service like this is a great idea especially in a city like New York. The area is so huge that tourists will easily get lost navigating around the city. Even if you have a GPS system, you still have to deal with finding parking and we all know how hard that can be. If you find parking, you might have to fork out a lot of money for parking fees. So what better way to see New York City by hiring New York City Bus Charters.

Puberty?

It seems just like yesterday when I first saw my daughter in the maternity suite. Her face was like an angel. She was so beautiful that the doctor and nurses even commented that dh and I made good looking babies. Now, in a couple of months, she will be 10 years old. I can see that she is starting to show early signs of puberty. She is tall for her age and in year or so, she will definitely be taller than me. I talked to a couple of moms of her classmates and they told me that their daughters are in the same stage too. Kids grow up so fast these days and before we know it, it's time to get some acne products.

Presidential Debate, Yea or Nay

So, what is your verdict? I think Senator Mc Cain came out more 'presidential' if you will, than Congressman Obama. I've been looking forward to these debates, much more than the conventions. The candidates didn't use speech writers for these, nor does the best orator have an advantage here. I can't wait to see the upcoming debates, there are two more before the election. Dh already made up his mind on who to vote for a long time ago whereas I haven't. That's how close this race is for me.

Clean and Blog by Using Dragon Naturally Speaking

Being a full-time mom and a blogger takes a lot of scheduling to be able to get things done. Time is at a premium and I try to use different things that help me do chores faster. When it comes to blogging, I am not a fast typist and I welcome anything that will save me time on writing my posts. I've gotten better over time but it still is not fast enough. This is where Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 Standard fits in. This software can write 150 words per minute, meaning I will be able to make more posts without getting tired from typing. I will also be able to make a post while doing household chores. How? My notebook has Bluetooth technology so I am able to use a wireless headset and microphone. By using Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 Preferred software, I can dictate my post and do laundry at the same time. Now we all know that folding clothes takes the longest time and it is impossible to do it along with blogging. With this software, my problem is solved. This software filters out background noise so you do not have to worry about that, you can even use this while watching your children's soccer game. This is most useful for bloggers with disabilities and for those who have athritis. They can use this software and speak into the microphone and see their words in the screen. This software has been so useful that a major newspaper, the New York Times printed a review which you can see here:NY Times Review of DNS10.

Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church

This is one of the most poignant memorial of World War II that I saw in Berlin. It is a short walk from the hotel we stayed in, Swissotel, which I wrote about HERE.
The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church incorporates the bell tower of the original 19th-century structure (ruined in World War II) into a dramatic glass and concrete church built in 1961. This memorial is located in the former East Berlin. The original church was first damaged on December 23rd, 1943 and completely destroyed in air-raids in April 1945.

Debt Management, One Answer to Your Financial Problems

I just heard on the news this morning that Washington Mutual Bank went out of business. What is happening? Big businesses are failing left and right. If these huge corporations are having financial problems, what more for regular people like us. We constantly hear in on the news these days, people are losing their properties because they cannot afford to pay their mortgages. Most of these people clearly took in a mortgage that is too big compared to what they can actually afford. Everyone is affected by this financial crisis. The news article I read mentioned that even your credit card limit might be affected by this. They reported that some consumers have already received notices from their credit card company that their limit was lowered.
This is scary especially for people with huge credit card balances or loans. One of the things you can do is go to the Personal Finance page of the United States Government website (http://www.usa.gov/Citizen/Topics/Money/Personal_Finance.shtml). This page has links to different articles that can help you start in managing your finances.
It has articles on Personal Credit Help, How to Pay Off Debt, How to Get Your Free Credit Report and Credit Information on MyMoney.gov.
You can also contact a credit counseling company like CareOneCredit.com which can help you with debt management. It is advisable to work with professionals that has a lot of experience in dealing with creditors since doing it yourself can be very daunting and complicated. They will help you in consolidating your debt, talk to creditors to lower your monthly payments and interests. You have 24/7 access to your account, receive monthly statements and have the option of electronic payments. Doing these will at the very least, help you avoid bankruptcy which will completely ruin your credit.

Help Your Child's Teacher

They spend most of the day with your child. They have the responsibility to educate your child. I think it's just right to support your child's teacher. What do I mean? If you get a class 'wishlist' from your child's teacher, take a moment to read through it. See what it is you can afford and buy it for the class. If you cannot afford to purchase one item, send whatever you can give to the teacher. We all know that they do not get paid enough. Most of them use their own money to purchase class supplies. So next time you get that class wishlist, do not set it aside or toss it. Go to Walmart or wherever and buy it, it is for your child's use in class afterall.

He's Gay, So What?

I liked Clay Aiken. This was years ago when he was on American Idol. There were rumors back then that he is Gay. It didn't bother me at all. So what if he is Gay? I like his voice and it's none of my business what his sexual orientation is. I was a little (ok maybe more than a little) disappointed when he flat out denied it. When Diane Sawyer asked him about it, he told her that she was rude for asking him that question. Now he is admitting that he is Gay. This is after years of denial. Why did he try to hide it? He probably didn't want to alienate the 'Claymates', his fans. If they really like him and care for him, then they should be able to accept him for what he is.

Our Love of Computer Games

Dh likes to play computer games. He's into the role-playing games. I remember his first game was Myst and this was a decade ago. He played all of the succeeding version and I think it's one of his favorite series. The games these days are more complex and the graphics are amazing. To be able to play these games, you need a lot of computer memory and the processor must be fast (like the Intel Centrino Duo or Quadro.) I know, that's a free plug for dh's company. LOL I also like to play games although I prefer a different kind. I played Roller Coaster Tycoon, Lemonade Tycoon, Cake Mania, etc. I enjoy it and is just one way to relax unless I'm playing Collapse, then I'd be so wired up. :) Do you play and what game do you like?

Financial Problems? Consolidate Your Debt

The financial crunch is across the board, everyone is feeling it. Bankruptcy filings are up and more people are probably considering it. If you have many credit card loans then you need to find the most effective way to consolidate debt. Filing for bankruptcy should be the very last option, you must avoid this since there are many repercussions. There are other ways to go about your financial problem.
-Go into Credit Counseling. This is a service that reviews your finances and then enrolls you into a Debt Management Plan. By doing this, they can help you lower your monthly interest rate and fees.
-If you have your own home and it has equity, you can file for Debt Consolidation either by refinancing or using the home equity loan. You have to be aware though that with a home equity loan, you can lose your home if you don't pay it back.
-You can also go into a Debt Management program that consolidates your debts, often with no interest. You make one payment to the program, and it distributes the money to your creditors.
-Debt Negotiation or Debt Settlement - it is a program to reduce your consumer debt by negotiating debt settlement to a lower level. You get a low monthly payment and you avoid bankruptcy.
-Debt Relief - you find help in fixing your debt through credit counseling, debt settlement, loan modifications and other ways.
In my opinion, the best way to do this is to get into credit counseling first. You need all the help you can get. You will learn how to handle your money and you will get aid in dealing with your creditors. The most important point is that you will avoid filing for bankruptcy. No matter which way you choose, solving your financial problems is just the first step. You need to be proactive. Try your best to curtail spending and save money. Do not live beyond your means and you'll be on your way.

Free Pinoy Channel TV

I saw a post in Jemi's blog about a website called Pinoy Channel TV. They have videos of different Filipino shows like Wowowee, The Buzz, TV Patrol, Maalaala mo Kaya, Philippine Survivor and many more. As far as I know it's free. There's a small AD at the bottom but I can live with that. There is an option to register but I was able to view the videos without signing up. If you want to watch a lot of videos then you have to sign up since I believe there are limits on what you can watch if are not logged in. This is a nice website for Filipinos living abroad. I know there are programs available when you subscribe through cable, satellite or ABS-CBN website but I'm a cheapskate when it comes to this so I'll be watching the shows on this free website. :) Go to www.PinoyChannelTV.com

Are Your Links Reciprocated?

Have you checked your bloglist lately? Do you know if your blog is still in their list of linked blogs? If you haven't then today is a good time to start checking. I visited a site in my bloglist this morning and saw that my blogs aren't listed in her bloglist. That's not fair. So what did I do? I took her off my list. I thought that she just made a mistake but both my blogs aren't listed. I didn't ask her why or how, why bother? If my links aren't reciprocated then hasta la vista baby!

Confidential to Ms. Goody-two-shoes from Caloocan, Philippines:
Don't judge me because of just one post. You do not know who I am. So you really think I deserve it? Ha! I am living comfortably without it. I do not need $ as bad as you do. Balikbayan Box or Door-to-Door

Do you have a family member who lives abroad? If you do, then you probably have sent them a care package or two. This is popular amongst Fiipinos. We send them a big box full of 'stuff'. The stuff could be anything, from canned goods like corned beef, chili con carne, to coffee, creamer, artificial sweeteners, perfumes and colognes, shampoo and conditioner, bars of soap, toothpaste, clothes, shoes, etc. Of course, these are available for purchase back in the Philippines but we still like to send them these things. Most of my relatives are already here in the US except for a few cousins and my brother. I rarely send a box for him, instead, I give him money for his daily expenses. This time though, I am sending him a care package. Dh has a lot of clothes that does not fit him and they are of good quality that I don't want to give it away so I am giving it to my brother. I'm also sending him special shoes, it's called MBT shoes which improves posture and relieves stress on the back and joints. He's a Taekwondo instructor in a college and he's been having problems lately. I told him it's the effects of getting old. :) How about you, what do you have in your door-to-door box?

A Fun Lunch Date with Friends

I had a great day yesterday. As I've posted the other day, I had lunch with my close friends here my house. You may have come across their blogs, Mira and Lanie along with Josie and their kids. I grilled a HUGE whole fish (about 16 inches long), yes, complete with the head; and cooked sauteed Bean Sprouts with shrimps, tomatoes and onions. We also had fried dried fish (Dilis and Espada) and squid paired with fresh tomatoes with Fish sauce. Of course, steamed rice was also served along with Peach-flavored iced tea. We had fruit salad and Cassava cake for dessert. It was fun and we were all full after eating all of it. It's nice to have a day like this. We don't get to do it often since we live far from each other. I live about 45 minutes away from Mira and 1hr and 10 min away from Mareng Lanie (that is if I am driving, dh gets there faster.) Even though we don't live close to each other, I'm proud to say that we remained close friends over the years. Thanks for coming my friends. :)

Beautiful Gemstone Beads for Your Crafts

When I go blog hopping, I come across a lot of sites about arts and crafts like painting, scrapbooking and jewelry making. I am amazed at all the beautifully crafted jewelry that these crafters made. They are exquisite and most of them are one-of-a-kind. Before I started blogging, I never knew what 'Etsy' meant. If you don't know what it is, it's the place where they sell their hand-made crafts. These crafters use different kind of materials for their jewelry projects. I saw some of them used beautiful gemstone beads and it looks very elegant. These kind of beads costs more than the regular beads but the resulting product shows the quality of the material used. There is a website where you can purchase these gemstone beads and other kinds of beads, it is called beadsofcambay.com. They have brass, copper, sterling silver, vermeil and even fresh water pearls. If you are a jewelry designer or a beading enthusiast with a valid tax-ID number, you can get a discount when you order wholesale gemstone beads. The discount ranges from 10% to 30% off depending on the total of your order. This applies to all in-stock beads except for silver, vermeil, copper and beads that are already discounted.

Updated Entrecard Rules

This past week, I wrote a post about my frustration with dropping ECs. There are blogs out there with no EC widget resulting in repeated visits. I am posting here the new Entrecard rules which I copied from the EC blog. If you come across a blog that does not have an EC widget, you MUST report it. On the page of your dashboard, at the bottom is a window, write the URL and name of the blog there along with the date and time. Hopefully this will stop that practice.

Looking for a New Web Hosting Company

I've been using Blogger for my blogs and while I am satisfied with it, I want to explore other options. I have seen a lot of blog using the Wordpress platform and was amazed by the options they have in designing and running their blogs. Of course if I ever decide to migrate to Wordpress then I need to find a new web hosting company. This part I am worried about since I do not know any good web hosting companies. Since I don't consider myself an expert in this area, I need a hosting site that has a good technical support and is available 24/7. Luckily, there is a website called webhostinggeeks.com and they have customer reviews of different companies. This is what I've been looking for. I'm able to read their experiences and find which one has the most number of satisfied customers. This site also has the web hosting company categorized into different groups: from Best Budget Hosting to Best Dedicated Hosting and everything in between. Another plus is they have a lot of articles to help you like SEO information to Web Design. If you are looking for a new web hosting company, the place to start is http://webhostinggeeks.com

Minute Clinics

Have you heard of Minute Clinics? They opened a number of clinics here in my state. I like this concept, no appointments necessary and they treat common illnesses like the flu, poison ivy rash, sinus infections, etc. A nurse practitioner will do the examination. I have no problem with this since in my doctor's health group , I see a nurse practitioner whenever I need to have something checked immediately and my primary care doctor is not available. I went to their website and found out that their price range from $30-$110 and what's more they accept most insurance plans. If you want to get a flu shot, it is available in these clinics daily starting Oct. 1. This is a good idea and I hope that they open one in my vicinity.

Get Ready with Your Christmas Cards

Three more months and it's the Holiday season again. You know what that means, it is time to get that special Christmas card ready before it's too late. I like sending out cards that are personalized with my children's photos, yes, I'm one of those people. I like the Christmas card selection at GalleryCollection.com. They have all kinds of cards for you to send to anyone, they even have quite a selection of Business Christmas cards. What I like about this website is that they donated personalized Holiday cards last year to this wonderful group called Soldier's Angels. This organization provides support and assistance to all soldiers in the United States Military. This year, GalleryCollection.com will again donate 180,000 personalized cards to this organization. Soldier's Angels send care packages to our service men and women in the military and the personalized cards from GalleryCollection.com is in those packages. This organization's motto is 'May no soldier go unloved.' I think that what they are doing is really important because through their work, all our soldiers will feel that people back home are thinking of them and supporting them. Through this organization, all of the soldiers will receive care packages this Holiday season. If you have a family member in the military, always remember that our thoughts and prayers are with you and your loved one.

Switzerland Church Spires

Travelling by train across Europe is the best way to see the countryside. This is one of the thousands of photos I took during our vacation. This is in a Switzerland countryside when we travelled from Venice, Italy to Luzern. I saw a lot of church spires like these in the villages we passed by. The other church tops are shaped like onions. It's getting late so I'll post it some other time. Do you notice anything odd? Does it remind you of something? Uhm, probably not. LOL

She wants a Pet

Happiness is Pets. This could be my daughter's motto. She has been bugging us to let her have either a dog or a cat. She's only 10 years old and I don't feel that she is ready for such a responsibility. She just needs to wait two more years and by then, I am hoping that she will be responsible enough to care for whatever pet she gets. Studies have shown that dogs have a positive effect on hospital patients. These dogs comfort the patients and help them cope with their current situation. Having a pet definitely brings happiness to the owners' lives. To see more things about happiness, visit happinesspages.com

A Deal or a Steal?

However you call it, I'm a happy camper. I went to Target this morning to look for a Halloween costume for my son. He is into the Transformers and want to be Optimus Prime (for those not familiar with the names, it's the red and blue one.) While I was there, I did what most women would do, go around the store and look for good deals. And guess what? I found this dual-screen digital picture frame. This will be perfect to show off the more than a thousand photos I took on our summer vacation in Europe. The digital frames I saw before only have one side that is digital and the other is for print photos. This has two, adjacent 7-inch screens and only uses a single memory card. It is made by Digital Décor (model DPF770.) The exciting part is, it's ON SALE! The regular price is $138.99 and marked down to $97.28. :) Oh, and I also found a scrapbook paperbook for my BFF Mira, it's on sale for $9.00. Don't you just love a good sale? I certainly do!

What's Happening this Week?

Well, I will be a single parent this week. Dh is out of town for some training so I have a full schedule. Usually, he drives the kids to and from school three times a week while I take care of the other two days. Tuesday and Thursday are usually my laundry day. Wednesday is now a busy day for me since I started my volunteer work at school. Friday is a long day since daughter's Gymnastics class is in the evening. I'm starting to use the TGIF phrase again. I haven't used this since I stopped working 9 years ago. Oh, I might have some friends over this Thursday, that is, if Mira and Josie have some time to come over for lunch. I am thinking of grilling a whole fish, yummy! I'll ask Lanie if she can come too. How about Carlota? Well, she lives too far. Maybe she can join us through webcam. LOL

Fun and Golf in Las Vegas

I miss my family back west. All my relatives are there and they always travel to Las Vegas for fun. Las Vegas is an ideal destination for everyone. There are a lot of things to do to satisfy every need. My husband loves to play golf and if ever we go back, he will find that Las Vegas Golf is on par with other places he's been like Scottsdale in Arizona or California. The TPC Las Vegas Package Special is perfect for us. It includes playing time at the TPC Las Vegas golf course and a stay at Harrahs, Marriott or Planet Hollywood. I know that he will enjoy playing at the TPC Las Vegas since this is a golf course that is the only PGA Tour owned public facility. I'm sure he will have a great experience playing in a golf course the PGA pros play. He will get the complete PGA experience complete with a caddie that will act as a guide along the golf course. As for me and the kids, I'd be happy to lounge around the pool sipping a Margarita.

My Frustration with Dropping ECs

Have you encountered this problem? You're dropping ECs from your Inbox and the blog you're dropping on does not have the widget? So you end up going back to the same blog again and again. Can I say Groundhog Day? At first I thought that the widget just did not load properly so I refresh the page, still nothing. This is frustrating. Why did you Dump Him?

I came across a magazine article last night while waiting for my daughter to finish her gymnastics class. It is titled "Why did you Dump Her?" The men's answer ranged from the simple "I'm not into her anymore." to the absurd "I don't like her new hairstyle." Of course, there are also serious answers like "She does not want to get married." and "She is jealous of all women." Which got me thinking, do we, as women have the same reason when we dump men? For me, I dumped one ex because I feel that he is not going to grow up. He loves his freedom and I felt that family responsibilities will be a burden to him. In short, he is not 'marriage material.' Another one I dumped because the distance between us is so great that I found it hard to keep the relationship going.
How about you? Why did you dump him?

Jungfraujoch Ice Tunnel

Imagine yourself walking inside a huge block of ice, that is how I felt walking in this ice tunnel. This is the entrance to the Jungfraujoch Ice Palace in Switzerland. It is freezing! I thought that I would be slipping and sliding all over the place but thank goodness I didn't. The Ice Palace is situated 100 feet under the Aletsch Glacier. It is a 3,280 sq.ft. museum made entirely of natural ice. Inside the Ice Palace are ice sculptures of wildlife: penguins, eagles, bears and fish. There is even an Inuit fishing beside an igloo. If you go, I advise that you bring a thick jacket or wear a couple of layers of clothing. Do not wear shorts, unlike some tourists we saw. They probably thought it would be warm since it was in the middle of June.

I'm sure my blogger friends will agree with me that blogging a couple of years ago was much more enjoyable. We had time to pop into each others' blogs and read the content and comment on it. Where are the Windmills?

When we went to the Netherlands this summer, I was hoping to see different kinds of windmills. I was surprised to learn that there aren't a lot of it around. What happened? Technology did. They are using electric pumps so there are no more use for the windmills. There are some still scattered around the country but the numbers are dwindling. I didn't want to leave the Netherlands without getting a photo with a windmill in the background. We went to this particular windmill on our last day on our way to the train station.

Color Labels for Your School Supplies

I have vivid memories of some of my school days starting from nursery until college. These are good memories of course, who would want to remember bad ones? I remember being excited every time the school year starts. I always have new things each year like uniforms, a pair of leather shoes, school supplies and a lunchbox. Do you remember those tin can lunch boxes with Charlie's Angels or Nancy Drew on it? Well, I used those when I was in grade school. I wished we had a Dymo label maker to use when I was in school. Since those kind of lunch boxes were popular, there were always three or four that are exactly the same. Can you imagine opening what you thought was your lunch box and find someone else's lunch? With a Dymo label maker, that would've eliminated that possibility. If I had it back then, I would use Color labels. White labels aren't fun enough, too generic in my opinion. It would've been nice to have labels on my notebooks. There were ten subjects so I had one notebook for each. The notebooks all have the same covers so I had to open it to find out what subject it is for. By using Dymo color labels, it would've been easier for me to pick up the right notebook to bring to class that day. Now that I am a mom, having a label maker makes organizing my kids' school supplies a breeze.

Teaching kids to be Ecologically Friendly

We've heard it said before, when we teach kids early on, it will become second nature for them the rest of their lives. That's why parents need to teach their children how to live 'green' or be earth friendly. This is done at home by recycling and using green products. One of the first products that I used which is considered 'green' is an insect repellent. The ones that are sold in stores usually have strong chemical in it and I don't feel safe using it for the kids or even for my husband and I. An insect repellent like Seaside Natural All Natural Bug Spray is the perfect product that can be safely used for children, especially babies. Who wouldn't want to raise green kids? I know I would. For this product and other eco-friendly products, go to www.freshandgreen.com

Getting ready for Winter

The other day, we went to purchase a wood burning stove. With the rising cost of heating these past few years, we decided that we need an alternative heat source other than what we currently have. We considered a pellet stove but the cost of the pellets is also high so we zeroed in on a wood burning stove. It will be installed at the end of October. They said that business skyrocketed these past few months and they have been very busy installing these equipments every week. This wood stove will go into the existing fireplace. We have to file a city permit for this to be installed in our house. Our next door neighbor have been using this kind of stove for 2 years now and they said that it saved them money on heating oil. For the fuel, we have a heavily wooded lot and there are many fallen trees on it. I hope that this will at least help lower our heating cost this winter.

Kanino kamo? Sa mga kabayan ko, kayo. Dito yung ibang mga usyusera galing.

The Books I Love

I used to be a voracious reader when I was younger. The first novel I read was 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne. After that, I was hooked. I read any book I can get my hands on. I even read both Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo by Jose Rizal. I've come to love thrillers and was an avid Robert Ludlum and Ken Follett fan. I have my cousins to thank for that since I was vacationing in my mom's hometown and they introduced me to these books. There are a lot of book sellers online but I want to find a site that has better prices than Amazon books. I want to save money since everything is so expensive now.

This is one of those days that everyone doesn't forget. I know where and what I was doing that morning. I was feeding my then two-year old daughter while watching Good Morning America. Librarian, My New Job Title

I never thought I would be a librarian, not that there's anything wrong with being one. :) Starting tomorrow, I will be volunteering in my kids' school. Being a private school, they rely heavily on private funds and parent volunteers. The school does not have a full-time librarian. Since both kids are in school now, I can help out in their school. It worked out perfectly for me since my daughter and my son's class library schedule falls on the same day. I remember growing up that the school library is one of my favorite rooms in the school. I love the smell of books. Weird, I know. LOL I borrowed the first novel I read, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, from the school library. I also liked leafing through the Card Catalog, you don't see this anymore. The kids nowadays don't even know what it looks like and what it is for since everything is computerized. I don't even think that they teach kids how to use the Dewey Decimal System. Do you still remember how to use it?

ABCs of internet Safety

My daughter is at the age where she can easily access any website. We are aware of what websites she visits because we make it our business to know. Even then, we are still concerned that she might come across some websites that are adult in nature. That's why it is very important to be aware as parents and know about internet safety. All parents need to know about Internet Safety ABCs. First, the internet is for Adults only. There are hundreds of adult websites that our children may accidentally find themselves in. Since there are no laws governing the internet, adult websites are not legally bound to keep kids off their sites. Second, we need to Be aware that there are electronic devices like handheld games that can connect to the internet through its' wireless technology. That means, any child can bypass strict parental controls on the computer to surf the internet using their DS or PSP. Third, you need to Check often. Always check your computer for any unwanted files like adult pictures. Using filters is only one part of internet safety, you also need to use a software that will scan your computer for pornographic content. www.surfrecon.com has the software that will do the job.

He wants to be Optimus Prime for Halloween

"What will you be this halloween?" That's the question I ask my kids when the month of September starts. I am one of those people who obviously do not procrastinate. I like to shop for halloween costumes a month or so before the date. I don't want to rush around the county looking for a particular costume in halloween costume stores and pulling my hair trying to figure out an alternative costume. If you have kids, you know what I mean. My son who was Captain Jack last year wants to be a Transformer. Not just any Transformer mind you, he wants to be Optimus Prime. Uh, why couldn't he be a clown or maybe even Sponge Bob? Lucky me, there is the internet and www.halloweenadventure.com. This website has hundreds of costumes in their inventory. Any costume you may want, they have it. They even have coordinating costumes for couples. If you want to be Adam and Eve, they have the costumes complete with the fig leaf. They also sell Disney costumes for those little girls who wants to be a princess this halloween. If you are looking for halloween accessories like wigs, make-up and halloween party decorations, this website has it too! What else do you need for halloween? How about a costume for your dog, cat or maybe your hamster? Well, maybe not a hamster but they do have pet costumes available. Our Wonderful Stay in Swissotel Berlin

Credit: Digiscrap elements created by: ©2006 Samara L. Gugler

We were lucky, all of the hotels we stayed in during our vacation across Europe has met and/or exceeded all our expectations. One of the hotels which exceeded it was Swissotel in Berlin, Germany. From the moment we registered, we knew that this was no ordinary hotel. The person who assisted us with registration came up to our room and made sure everything was within our liking. The room was clean, spacious and impeccable. Housekeeping thought that our son was still a baby so they had a cot, bottle warmer with baby bottle, baby wipes, stuffed musical doll, baby slippers, baby towel, tub, water temperature checker, step stool, potty and even a rubber duck! That is one special service! The bathroom has a separate shower and bath tub, bath salts and even a weighing scale. The surprise doesn't end there. This hotel has espresso machines in every room (nothing like drinking an espresso to wake you up in the morning) and has a turn-down service each night. They come in and get the bed ready for the night, put Toblerones on each pillow and lay down foot towels and slippers on each side of the beds. The breakfast buffet is the best among the hotels we've stayed in. They have every kind of breakfast food you can think of, they even have smoked salmon! They have made-to-order pancakes, waffles and eggs. Coffee here comes in all forms, Espresso, Latte, Mocha, Cappucino and my favorite Cafe Macchiato. I could go on and on about the good things but I know you already got the picture. If you ever are planning a vacation in Berlin, Swissotel is the place to stay.

Get Him One of the Best, A Breitling Watch

What do you give someone who has 'everything'? Well, you can give him a sports car or if you want to really surprise him, you can give him a very nice watch. Not just any kind of watch mind you, I'm talking about expensive and very well made and well known Breitling watches. It is not like other websites that sells watches. What sets them apart is their incredible selection of Breitling watches and luxury brands like Movado, Cartier, Omega, Tag Heuer, Patek Philippe and Chopard.
I like this particular men's watch, the Breitling Bentley Flying B Chronograph Mens' Automatic Watch. It is 18K White Gold, has a brown dial with a brown leather strap. It's elegant and understated, not too flashy and bulky. Thewatchery.com also has a one-of-a-kind promotion which entitles you to a free or 80% off watch with selected purcases. Hanna Lost Her Umph

I'm glad Hanna didn't pack a punch when it passed through our area last night. There were a lot of boat owners anxiously waiting by the harbor to see if their boats are in danger. I'm sure they and all homeowners are relieved. We got lucky unlike some people down south. There's another one coming towards Florida, hurricane Ike. I hope the people down south don't get pummeled by these storms, especially those in New Orleans. They've suffered enough. There aren't a lot of leaves on the lawn, just a few scattered here and there. I remember there was a storm which broke some tree branches around the property. I hope my soon-to-be-ripe tomatoes made it through since it will be my first harvest. Did any of you read the news that David Spade is soon to become a dad? They said that he fathered the unborn baby of a Playboy model. He asked for a DNA testing and it was confirmed. Well, good for him that he's taking responsibility unlike other men who just run away.

I remember when my husband broke the news, he accepted a job offer in the East coast. I was surprised even though I knew that he interviewed for it. It didn't really dawned on me that it could happen and it did. Our last month in California was a blur, there were a lot of things to take care of. I had to turn in my resignation letter, say goodbye to friends and relatives, sell the house and find interstate moving companies and car movers for our vehicles. Choosing moving companies is very important. You want a company that is reliable and who has reliable and honest workers. Relocation.com is a website where you can find help in all aspects of moving. It Has Been a Long Day

TGIF! Daughter started her gymnastics class tonite and what is only an hour seemed like two. Son wanted to go home after five minutes so I had to answer all his questions as to why we cannot leave. He's good though, he is not like some kids who throws tantrums if they don't get what they want. We could've taken the early class but daughter's friend is on this time slot. Her mom, who is also my friend works till 5pm so the earlier class wouldn't work for them. Daughter and M signed up together and each will go only if the other is there. We'll see if they would want to continue gymnastics after two months. If they will, I'm certainly not looking forward to winter driving at night! I'm just glad that I have a 4WD!

Ladies, Are You Ready for Some Football?

Uh, do we have a choice? Football season starts this Sunday and I'll bet my Dell XPS notebook that dh will be in his favorite seat and watching the first kickoff on his plasma tv. So what does football season mean to our household? It means that we schedule stuff around the Patriots' game schedule. No parties, shopping, errands for him on Sunday afternoon/evening. If ever he doesn't have a choice (because I said so LOL), then he'll listen to the game in the car. He's all ready for the season. He has chosen his players in the NFL fantasy game and he has some time scheduled to watch the game at his childhood friend's house. So what do I do when football is on? I'll sometimes watch it with him if my favorite teams are playing. If not, then I'll be up and about around the house, either baking, cooking or blogging.

I'm Seeing Double

Are my eyes just tired from staring at my notebook screen? I was dropping ECs last night and boy, my eyes started watering. I'm wearing prescription eyeglasses with Progressive lenses. For those not in the know, those are lenses that have reading lenses on the bottom part. It's not obvious because you don't see any lines or the half-moon shape. I think I need another pair of eyeglasses for computer work. One that is anti-glare to reduce the eyestrain that I'm sure I get after a couple of hours working on my notebook. Since I've used my once a year lens allowance from my optical insurance, this new pair will be paid solely by me. I want to save money and do not want to spend a lot on a new pair. I've been seeing a lot of posts in the blogs I visit about the $ 8 Zenni Optical Rx Eyeglasses. That is really a great deal for prescription glasses. So what's the catch? Nothing. The reason why they can sell eyeglasses so cheap is because they manufacture their own eyeglass frames. By selling these frames directly to the customers lets them set their prices low. They have a large selection of stylish frames to choose from. Whatever kind of lens you prefer, they offer it too. From progressive lens, photochromic (the one that changes color), bi-focal, tinted sunglass lens and single-vision lens.

Schedule Flu Shots

It's coming, flu season is upon us. It's time to call your family doctor/pediatrician and schedule the flu shots. It used to be that only children under 5 years old get the flu vaccine every year. This year, my kids' pediatrician wants all kids to get it. I've been doing this every year, I always ask for a flu shot for my daughter who is now 9. Even if they tell me that she does not need one, I tell them that I want her to have it. Dh and I also get ours, he gets it from work while I get it from my Primary Care doctor. Doing this every year spares our household from getting the bug each year. Believe me, it is worth it.

The press release also discussed the recommendations made by CollegeZapps.com on how to apply for colleges. Among the suggestions is to apply to many colleges, increasing the chances of admission and giving you more options for financial aid. They gave a lot of helpful suggestions and tips. Press Release:

Student Aid Requests Soar - Families Feel Pinch in Tight Economy

Littleton, CO – August 27, 2008 – Facing a sputtering economy, escalating tuition costs and a rise in college admission applications; would be college students are applying for financial aid in surging numbers. Nationally, 8.9 million students filed federal student aid forms during the first half of 2008, a 16.3 percent increase over the same period last year.

For decades, the federal student loan program has helped tens of millions of students pay for college. About 47 percent of families borrow money to help get kids through college, according to a study released August 20th by lender Sallie Mae and Gallup. The study affirmed that federal loans are easily the most popular source of borrowing.

“The student loan industry has experienced a volatile year and the impact of this volatility is starting to trickle down to parents and students. Tighter lending standards and falling housing prices have made it harder for parents to tap home-equity loans and lines of credit to pay their kids' education bills,” said David Kenney, CEO of CollegeZapps. It is critical for parents and students to have options. If you don’t apply – you can’t be accepted. If you are not accepted to multiple colleges - you don’t have choices.”

“Each college has a different cost of attendance based on factors such as tuition, fees, room, board, projected expenses and regional costs of living. Parents and students want to weigh their best options of grants, scholarships, loans, and work study,” continued Kenney.

In an interview titled “The Credit Crisis and Student Loans” on the PBS Nightly Business Report, Brian Lee Sang, Financial Aid Director at American University said, “It's creating issues where families are coming to us asking us for institutional help, saying, hey can I get more money any way to try to help get us through the spring semester. But I think more colleges are going to see even more of this and feel the impact of this next year.”

Families are looking for more options.

CollegeZapps www.collegezapps.com has opened a window of options for parents and college applicants by simplifying and streamlining the college application process. With CollegeZapps completing actual college applications is now fast, accurate and professional. Students can spend more time choosing what colleges best fit them, applying to more colleges in less time, and reducing the redundancy that comes with filling out multiple application forms.

CollegeZapps recommends applying to as many as 10 colleges and dividing them up into three groups:

Group one: Apply to colleges where you feel you'll most likely to be accepted. These are usually called "safeties" or "back ups."
Group two: Apply to colleges that are overall good matches, with a high probability that you will be accepted. These are colleges that fit academically and socially.
Group three: Apply to "reach" colleges. These are colleges that present an admissions challenge.
