Are You Ready for Some Football (Commercials)?

Okay, let's face it. I'm not that excited to watch this year's Superbowl. Who will be if their favorite team didn't make it? Although to tell you the truth, I'm rooting for the underdog this year. Yup, Go Cardinals! This franchise hasn't won any Superbowl title, wouldn't it be a great story? Dh invited some buddies over so I will be busy in the kitchen whipping up some traditional superbowl fare. I'll be making some Chipotle chicken wings, Nachos Nuevos ala Applebees and Carbonara. So watch out for these yummy recipes to be posted in my food blog.

Anyway, the main reason why I watch the Superbowl is for the half-time show and commercials. This year's half-time performer is the Boss aka Bruce Springsteen. Well, I hope he sings 'Born in the USA' since it's the only song I like from his albums. Now what about the commercials and what's the photo of the 3D glasses above? Well, dh brought it home from work. It's a shameless plug really since dh works for one of the three sponsors of this particular AD. NBC, Intel and Dreamworks will show a trailer from the 3D animated movie 'Monsters & Aliens' which will come out in March. Viewers will need this special 3D glasses to see the effects. This is not just your regular 3D glasses mind you. So what's the difference? From the Intel website:

"Most of the 3D glasses people are used to wearing use a technology called anaglyph, which can create stereoscopic images from opposing colors – usually red and blue – that are slightly offset in order to create the illusion of depth. The problem is that any red and blue colors in the image get filtered, meaning that colors often have to be de-saturated to achieve a believable 3D image.
The new spots use a technology called "ColorCode," which will display a normal-looking 3D image when viewed without the glasses. However, the minute color offsets included in the image will translate into a 3D image when viewed with the glasses on. "

"Instead of (traditional) red and blue lensing, there's a different set of filters that are used" that are better at reproducing color, said David Katzenberg (Dreamworks CEO). "The second thing is a greater level of precision in terms of the broadcast signal--right eye, left eye. The blurry kind of stuff is cleaned up a lot," he said. "

These 3D glasses are available for free at stores like Best Buy and Target (where you can also find nice tv stands.

PhotoHunt#7 - Furry

Webkinz

This week's theme is FURRY. Since we do not have pets, the only 'furry' thing I can think of are my daughter's stuffed animals. She has quite a collection of Webkinz. I think she has 22 Webkinz as of her last count. She took this photo herself. I gave her my old Olympus digital camera and she has been taking photos all over the house.

Pasalubong aka Care Package

Don't you just love your relatives? I do! They always have a care package for me everytime they visit other family members in California. My first cousin's wife and their son came for a short visit last Christmas. My aunt mailed me some goodies since I live on the East coast. When my mom went back for a vacation last year, she sent me all these stuff shown in the photo above. It contained some of my favorites like the Cornick (corn snack), prawn crackers and Chocnut (peanut milk chocolate). She also sent me a new kind of Sinigang mix (sour soup) and PJs and other clothing for the kids.

We are going to visit the Philippines this summer. This will only be the second time for dh to go there, the third time for my daughter and first time for my son. I plan to send a couple of boxes before our trip. This will save us the hassle of stuffing our luggages with gifts for relatives. The airlines also lowered the total weight of luggages and it is expensive when you go over weight. I already shopped for some gifts last month. I took advantage of the after-Christmas Sales. I still have a lot more shopping to do, mainly for make-up, perfume and cologne. My brother also asked for a sports watch. If only I have a lot of money, I would give him a choice of Luminox watches but I don't. So I'll look around for an affordable sports watch for him.
I am looking forward to this vacation since it is going to be a reunion of sorts for our family. My two cousins and their families from the UK are going back as well as my parents, sister and other relatives from California. Can't you tell, it's going to be a blast!

The Wednesday Papal Audience - How to Get Tickets

A visitor emailed me and asked for advice on visiting the Vatican and attending the weekly Papal Audience. I decided to write this post to share my experience and help those who plan to visit Rome.

When I was planning our trip to Rome, Italy last year, I knew that attending the weekly Wednesday Papal Audience is something I want to do. I read in a travel forum that I can get some tickets for this event from the American church in Rome.
So I googled the website of the Santa Susanna church and emailed them to ask for tickets to the Papal Audience. I didn't hear from them until a few days before we left for Italy. They emailed back and informed me that they reserved the tickets for me and it will be ready for pick-up the evening (after 6 pm) before the audience. This is convenient although you need to take a taxi to reach the church depending on where you are that day. There is no fee for the ticket but they accept $ donations.

I also found out through reading Rick Steves' travel book about Rome, that you can get tickets directly from the Swiss guards that are posted on the entrance to the bronze door. Since I have no idea where this place is, I scrapped this idea. So there we were on Tuesday at the Vatican, we just finished the 3 hour visit to the Vatican museums. (If you plan to go, I suggest going in the afternoon where there are no lines to get in the museum.) We were wandering around, we turned a corner and I looked up and saw on the top of the stairs two Swiss guards and a big bronze door. Voila, there it is! There was a problem though, a barricade was placed at the bottom of the stairs and a Polizei was standing guard. So I told dh I'm going to try to talk my way in. I don't know why I said that when I don't know all but 10 words in Italian. Anyway, with my handful of Italian, I asked the policeman if I can go up the stairs to ask for some tickets for the Wednesday Papal Audience. I think I said something like "Perdone, I want tickets to the Papal Audience" while pointing towards the door. He probably know what it is because he said "Si". So there I went. I asked one of the Swiss guards in English if I can get four tickets. He went inside and came back with the golden Papal Audience tickets. So my advice is, if you will be at the Vatican days before the Wednesday audience, you can get these tickets. The bronze door is on the right side of the square if you are facing St. Peter's Basilica.

If you want to get a front row seat, you need to get there very early. When we arrived, it was around 9 AM and the first 10 rows were already occupied. We still had a good view of the Pope. As you can see from the photos, no one could really get up close because of the steps leading to the stage. Bring an umbrella because it can get very hot in the summer. Bring some water to prevent dehydration. The audience starts at 10 AM and there are big screens at strategic places so you can still see what's going on even if you are seated far away. Remember to dress appropriately if you are visiting the Vatican. I saw some people turned away because they wore shorts, mini-skirts, low-cut blouses or sleeveless shirts. The audience lasted for about 3 hours, it is LONG. The Pope did not say the Mass, he gave his blessings to those who attended and acknowledged the big groups that came from all over the world. If you are a Catholic and plan to visit Rome, I recommend going to the Wednesday Papal Audience.

If you have other questions about the Papal Audience, Vatican museum tour or Rome/Florence/Venice questions, feel free to email me. You will find my email address under MY LINKS at the right sidebar of this blog. :o)

Why Do You Unfriend Someone?

I belong to a couple of social networking sites and most recently, with the prodding of my sister, I signed up with Facebook. I am most active with Friendster as most of my friends in the Philippines are members of this network. I'm also with Hi5 although I don't honestly remember who sent me an invite. I know that I signed up with MySpace just because I wanted to purchase an original song by a Fil-Am musician. I only have two friends there, this musician and the guy who works in MySpace. :o)

Anyway, back to the title of this post. I was shopping online for Cheap Blinds when I got sidetracked and logged in to my Friendster account. I was checking my friend list when I noticed some faces (only two) missing. I checked their profile and sure enough it was set on private and I cannot view it because I'm not their friend? WTH? I don't remember offending anyone. It made me wonder why? It's most likely that I will meet again one of those who unfriended me. I'll definitely ask (nicely) her why she did it. I'm just curious. It's not that I'm going to miss her, I guess it's just an ego thing. LOL

To Judge or Not to Judge?

Has this ever happened to you? There's a new person in town that you have not met. You heard from a third party some things about this person that one couldn't be proud of. Will you consider a meeting with them or will you decide that you don't want anything to do with him or her? I am in this dilema right now. There's a Filipina who recently moved to my city. She married an American and migrated here late last year. I heard about her from a close friend and judging from what she told me, this person wouldn't be in my radar if I was living in the Philippines. Let's just say that she worked in a bar. Enuff said.

Anyway, I've been thinking about this for a long time. Should I judge her even though I have not met her in person? That goes contrary to what I was taught growing up. Didn't we always hear "Don't judge a book by its' cover"? Or "Don't judge a person unless you've walked in their shoes."

So, I finally decided that I will meet her tomorrow after I shop for plus size lingerie that my friend asked me to buy. I figured that if I was in her shoes, I would want people to judge me for who I am and not what I did. (Although, if I nitpick, this argument wouldn't hold water.) So enough with the nitpicking. I will meet up with her and will hold off any judgement until then. Everyone needs a second chance, right?

Surveys Used to Be ____

And that was years ago. I remember getting cash payouts and stuff for participating in surveys. Nowadays, even the survey company is in recession. Imagine spending 20 minutes answering a survey and what do you get? An entry in their sweepstakes. I can think of a dozen things that are more important use of my time. Of all the survey companies I've tried, I liked Lightspeed the most. It's easy and you get a fair compensation for your time. I haven't done any surveys lately, actually it's been months. What about you? Do you participate in surveys and do you find their compensation fair?

Change of Strategy

Everyone is doing some belt-tightening nowadays. Even if people are not affected by the lay-offs, you feel the effects some other way. I already prefer to buy items that are on sale before this recession. Now, I get out of my way to find it. When I was looking for a pair of Ugg boots for my daughter, I didn't buy the first discounted pair I came across. I'm so glad that I waited because a couple of days later, I saw another website where I got a better deal. I only paid $75 for a pair of this popular boots. So the moral of the story is not to give in to impulse buying. Go home and think about it. You'll save a lot of $$ by doing this.

Family First

It's true what they say about getting married and starting a family, your whole life changes drastically. I remember when I was still single and had to designate a beneficiary for my term life insurance
and of course I put in my parents name and my siblings. The moment I got married, I changed it to my husband. Now, my first priority is my family. That doesn't mean that I don't care for my parents and siblings anymore. I'm the eldest in the family therefore I have responsibilities. I think this is typical in many Asian countries, children caring for their parents when they're older. Now that I have my own kids, I am trying to instill these values that I grew up with. I know that I am not going to show them the door once they turn 18. No offense to those who think otherwise but 18 year olds are not ready to be on their own. Plus, they will be going to college, no ifs or buts about it.

Top 8 Auspicious Food Symbols for Chinese New Year

1. Hot Pot

A steaming hot pot (or chinese fondue) with meat, seafood and vegetables) is a staple for a Chinese New Year celebration.

If you want to read the Chinese Horoscope for the Year of the OX, I blogged about it HERE.

2. Fish

Fish is the most popular dish served during Chinese New Year. In Chinese, fish has the same sound as surplus and abundance. A whole steamed fish is served on Chinese New Year's eve for the reunion dinner. It is a good omen to leave the bones and head and tail intact. This symbolizes surplus and abundance and a good beginning and end in the new year.

3. Shrimp

Shrimp in Mandarin and in Cantonese sounds like someone laughing. The Chinese eat shrimp for happiness and well-being.

4. Boiled dumplings

Boiled dumplings are shaped like gold ingots. The Chinese word for dumplings sounds like the word which means the hour of transition into the New Year. Thed umplings which are filled with meat are eaten on Chinese New Year's eve to bring in good luck and wealth in the New Year. Sometimes a coin is placed in one of the dumplings. Whoever bites on it will have plenty of wealth in the new year. When dumplings and yellow noodles are cooked together they mean golden threads through gold ingots.

5. Oyster

The Chinese word for Oyster sounds like the word which means 'good things'.

6. Green vegetables

For closer family ties, Chinese serve green vegies.

7. Sticky rice cake

What Else is Next?

First it was the fridge, then the stove, now it's the vacuum cleaner. Well, looking at the bright side, at least the pattern here is the cost is getting lower. Nonetheless, it still costs money. I was cleaning the area rugs in the dining and living rooms when the vacuum cleaner went kaput. This is the second time it broke. The first time, I ordered a new belt online and got it working again. Now, dh said that another belt from a diffferent part of the vacuum needs replacing. Considering the cost of the belt plus the shipping and handling charges (some companies charge too much even though the item is light and small!) wouldn't it be more cost effective to purchase a new vacuum cleaner? Grrr, there goes the savings for a new washer and dryer. I've been saving $ for these appliances but it always end up being spent for something else. What do you think of the Dyson vacuum cleaner? I heard from my friend that it really is a very good vacuum cleaner. They have a dog and she said that it is the only one that can pick up pet hair and dirt like no other vacuum cleaner can.

Cute or Not, I'm Using It

I wrote about what I received from dh for Christmas here. One of my gifts is a pair of flannel PJs since I love wearing it during winter. There is a big BUT because this PJs is decorated with white polar bears with different color scarfs. LOL Dh told me that I can exchange it with something I like since he kept the receipt. Apparently, the other PJs he saw at Kohl's are either too bright or he doesn't like the design. So, this PJs sat in it's box for almost a month. Should I return it or not? Well, the other day, I decided that I'm going to use it. It's just a pair of PJs and no one except for my family will see me wearing it. It's just like getting a gift from my kids, even though it's only a couple of dollars or better yet, one of their art projects, I still hang it prominently in the house. It's the thought that counts right? Just don't ask me to go out of the house wearing it. LOL

A Sign of the Times

When I've just gotten comfortable with our health plan, sure enough, we have to change again. We have a different kind of health plan this year although we are still with the same health insurance company. Dh's company had to change it since Cigna's rates went up. We chose one wherein our monthly contribution went down but we have to fork over a part of the payment. I'm still trying to understand how this all works. It's all written in English but why is it that it seems as if it's written in a foreign language? The good thing is that we get to keep the same primary care doctor and we don't need a referral to see a specialist. I wonder if this new plan will cover weight loss pills? LOL

Change is Here

Well, it is finally here. Today at noon, President Obama will take the oath of office the day after Martin Luther King's day. How cool is that? Finally, we will have a president that is of mixed race in the White House. I am happy for my kids because they are just like our president, they are half and half. The president is half white and half black and he is now leading the greatest country in the world. I know that there is still racism and it's a fact of life but electing a president of mixed race is one big feat. I hope that President Obama will do everything that he has promised in his campaign. Good luck Mr. President.

Still Dead Tired

I've been absent from blogging these past few days because I prepared for my daughter's 10th birthday party last weekend. I am dead tired yesterday and still have not recovered fully. This is one of those times where I wish I have some help in the house. I cooked and cleaned all by myself. Phew, I'm glad that I only have two kids and their birthdays are 6 months apart. LOL I cooked a total of 6 dishes: Baked Penne, Barbequed Pork Baby Back Ribs, Osso Buco, Macaroni Salad and Pancit Palabok. I also made Puto(Rice cake) and Leche Flan.

It was just a small celebration with a few close friends and their families. Some family and friends weren't able to make it. My friends Mira of Random Thoughts, Lanie of I Thought So and Lou of The Shutterbug came over despite the weather not cooperating. It took Lou and her family about 3 hours to get to our place because of the weather. Good thing I made Lou the same cake from this post. I promised to give her this cake the next time we see each other. (I hope it was worth the trip Lou! LOL) I think it also took Lanie and family almost the same amount of time because they got behind two snowplows on their way here. This is why I LOVE my friends! :o) Better end this here since I still need to google what a Mesothelioma lawyer is.

Chinese Horoscope for the Year of the Ox

Chinese New Year will be celebrated on January 26 this year. This year of the Ox is year 4707 in Chinese year. The Chinese use the lunar calendar and each month begins on the darkest day. The Chinese New Year celebrations start on the first day of the Chinese month and continue until the fifteenth when the moon is brightest.

The Chinese Zodiac is a 12 year cycle. Each year of the 12 year cycle is named after one of the original 12 animals. Each animal has a different personality and different characteristics. The animal is believed to be the main factor in each person's life that gives them their traits, success, and happiness in their lifetime. (Source: Wikipedia)

Here are two Chinese horoscope predictions for the year of the Ox.

RAT

Rat Years: (1912, 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996)

Good Personality Traits: Generous, Ambitious, Imaginative and Persistent.

Bad Personality Traits: Critical, Suspicious, Power-hungry and Angry.

Rat¢s Compatibility: Ox, Dragon and Monkey.

Forecast: Chinese Horoscope for Rats says that these people are going to face instability in their own year 2009. They are most likely to be restive throughout the year and therefore might not harbor great results. According to the Chinese Astrology, the Rat is advised to wait for things to happen in their own year. Opportunities should be grabbed at the first sight to get good results. Many Rats might also face emotional problems in the year 2009, so they are advised to pursuit their hobbies in order to face the emotional stress. Like always, this year too, the Rats will inspire the feeling of loyalty in others, thus generating their own goodwill. Ambitious Rats who are trying hard to achieve their ambitions, might find the path difficult but not impossible. Rats are also advised to avoid indulging in gossips this year for mental and physical well-being. According to Chinese Horoscopes, Rats are going to face changes in personal as well as professional life. Moving in to a new office or home is also on cards for most of the Rats this year. Love life will be a package of mixes for many Rats, as many are expected to get married and many are expected to break off from a past relationship and start afresh. Chinese Horoscope for the Rats says that the Rats ageing between 24 and 60 years of age will be seen lacking energy in 2009. They are most likely to hurt their fingers and back, so they need to be careful for both these body parts throughout this year. Overall, the Rat year according to the Chinese Astrology will be a year of enjoyment and prosperity for the Rats.

OX

Ox Years: (1901, 1913, 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997 and 2009)

Bad Personality Traits: Conservative, Angry, Unemotional and Ignorant.

Apart from this, the Oxen are advised to avoid any clashes of opinions with their partners, be it in marital life or professional life in 2009. Chinese Horoscopes 2009 indicates, that the Oxen are going to get many opportunities to rise in their career. They need to change some tactics to excel in their professional life in 2009. AI is Back

No, not Artificial Intelligence, it's American Idol. The season starts tonight at 8 pm. I used to be an avid watcher during the first two seasons. Now, I only watch the beginning and the end. I skip the middle part. I don't know, is it just me or is it getting boring? I used to religiously vote every week for my favorite contestant and I even used the redial feature a lot of times. I guess I got tired of the whole thing. I got bored while watching it that sometimes I'll surf the internet looking for tv mount for the set in the kitchen. Anyway, I think that a lot of people feel the same way since viewership was down last season. Is that why they have this new judge? Do you think she'll bring something fresh to the show? I also read somewhere that there wouldn't be much AI wannabe-rejects this season. I think this is a good idea since I feel bad for those people who humiliate themselves on TV. Although I believe a lot of people like this part. Unless they have something new and exciting this season, I'll only watch the beginning, to see the Idol wannabes and the end, to see who get to be THE American Idol. I hope there's another Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood in this bunch.

My first born is now 10 years old and is growing like a weed! No, I don't feel old (unless I see the whites in my hair LOL) but it still amazes me how it seems like my kids are growing up so fast. Does anyone else feels that way or might have felt that way in some point? She's now in her tween stage, that awkward point where she's not a 'kid' anymore but she isn't a teen either. I remember when I was at this stage, I didn't know which part of the store to shop for clothes. It's different now since there are a lot of choices for tweens when it comes to clothing. Which brings me to one sore point. I buy her clothes and shoes which she does not like and does not wear (unless I talk her into wearing it). It's not as if the clothes are hideous. What gives? I've come to a point where I don't even buy her clothes unless she is with me. Then I have to ask her over and over again if she 'really' likes it. I'm thinking of drafting an agreement that she needs to sign, something like this:

I, A, do solemly swear, that I will wear these clothes and shoes. I will not give mommy a hard time when she asks me to wear something nice and pretty. I will not make funny faces or make any comments. I will not whine. I promise not to ask why I should wear nice shoes instead of my favorite Nike sneakers. I will lose ALL my priveleges if I do any of these actions.

What do you think? I probably will have to list all the priveleges that she can lose. It's better to have everything in black and white. LOL
Anyway, this was just a thought, for now. I hope that I don't have to resort to this. Wish me luck!

Photohunt #5 - Aftermath

This is Michelangelo's Pieta on display at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. In the aftermath of the attack by a deranged visitor in 1972, it was enclosed in protective glass. In the incident, the statue was struck 15 times and broke off the tip of the nose of the Virgin Mary.

Compare that to Michelangelo's other Pieta in Florence. There is no protective glass and we were able to walk up and touch it. (shhh, it's a secret LOL). In this second version of the Pieta, the man holding Jesus is supposedly Michelangelo himself.

Skywatch Friday #5

Aletsch Glacier

This is the Aletsch Glacier, Europe's largest. It has been
retreating for nearly 150 years. I took this photo from a
restaurant at the Jungfraujoch (Top of Europe) in
the Bernese Alps of south-central Switzerland.
This is Europe's highest-altitude railway station at 11,332 ft.
See Jungfraujoch photos here.

I May Have Been a Fairy Godmother in a Past Life

Really. I've been wishing lately that I have a magic wand. I'd go around the blogging world and whirl it around and all will be well with everyone. Whenever I drop ECs, I do a fast browse and read if something catches my eye. Yesterday, I came across many blogs that tugged at my heartstrings. How I wish I can reach out and help these fellow bloggers. Whatever their troubles may be, they all need comfort and encouragement. Most of the times I leave a comment but there are times where I would hesitate. I start writing a comment then change my mind and just move on. Do they really want to know what I'm thinking? Do they need another "I hope everything will be okay." message? Will my comforting words mean something to a total stranger? What do you think?

Picture Meme

I received this meme from Ana of Chica and Pumuckl. Thanks kitties and mommy!

Here are the rules:

1. Go to your Picture Folder on your computer or wherever you store your pictures.
2. Go to the 6th Folder and then pick the 6th Picture.
3. Post it on your blog and tell the story that goes with the picture.

4. Tag 5 other glorious people to do
the same thing and leave a comment on their blog telling them about it.

The 6th folder is titled 'Dad' and it has photos of my parents and other things that my dad asked me to resize. This is the 6th photo in that folder. It is my parent's wedding photo forty-four years ago. They got married when they were 30 years old. My dad was then a Captain in the Army and my mom was an Optometrist. My mom's gown was custom made and is full of beads. She told me that her train is very long and very heavy. I remember seeing this gown when I was younger. She also kept those pointy shoes with killer heels. Sadly, neither I nor my sister used her wedding gown. My mom was super skinny before and I think her waist was only 20. Can you imagine that? LOL Anyway, maybe my daughter will be able to use it. Oh wait, I remember she told me that she wouldn't get married. She said that she'll just get a dog, a cat and a horse. LOL

Ok, I have to break the last rule. I'm tagging Lanie, Mira, Amy, Carlota, Amor and Lou.

I'm a News Hound

Ever since I was in grade school, I like to read the newspaper. Nowadays, I get the news online since I'm in front of the computer in my spare time.
I saw this quiz from one of the blogs I dropped EC on and wanted to play. So here's my score:

You Remember 90% of 2008

You were paying attention during 2008.

And you remember what happened really well.

You'll be able to talk about 2008 for years to come...

Even when most people have forgotten what went down.
