PhotoHunt #10 - Thankful
With all the foreclosures around the country, I am thankful that we didn't go over our heads when we built our house many years ago. Unlike other homeowners who took out jumbo mortages and bought Mc Mansions, dh and I built a house that we can afford. I know that it's tempting to sign off on that loan and live in a big house but why live beyond your means and have lots of stress just to impress other people? JMHO

Top Chef Finale
Bravo TV's Top Chef is one of my fave reality show and last night was the season finale. The last three chefs that remained where Carla, Hosea and Stefan. Among these three chefs, Stefan has won the most challenges. He is good although he has a rough personality. Sometimes I think he's so full of himself and other times I think that he just knows he is good that it comes off as obnoxious. Carla is my favorite contestant this season. She first started slow but gained steam on the second half of the season. I love her interviews, it shows her wonderful personality, very friendly and down to earth. She has this big, brown eyes that lights up like a led light bulb when she's excited. I'm sure it would be fun when you spend a day with her. Hosea meanwhile, is your low-key, shy kind of guy. A complete opposite of Stefan.
All season long, I feel like Hosea is competing against Stefan first, the rest of the chefs second. Hosea feels that Stefan is the one to beat since he keeps on winning the challenges. He was right though since at the finale it all came down between him and Stefan. With Carla, I was disappointed that she went along with the suggestion of her sous chef, former Top Chef contestant Kacey. This was her downfall in my opinion. Carla should've stuck with her original menu and not go along with Kacey's suggestions since the first dish wasn't cooked properly and the souffle didn't turn out good. Because of this, Carla was out of the running for the title.
It all came down to the men's last dish; they have to cook a three-course meal and Stefan made a so-so dessert while Hosea, knowing that desserts is not his strong suit, opted to make another entree which wowed the judges. If they had to judge the chefs according to their accomplishments the whole season, then Stefan would've surely won. On this show though, they're judged by the last meal they made and Hosea won hands down. He received $100,000 and according to him, he will put up his own business.

Photo Hunt #9 - Warm

This week's theme is WARM. While preparing for our our summer vacation, I purchased two hand-held fans. It was used countless times during our vacation. I added a larnyard to the fan and my daughter had it on in this first photo. We were waiting in line to get into St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican and my son is using the fan right here since it was in the mid 80's that day. This next photo was taken on an outdoor Italian restaurant in Borgo Pio, near the Vatican.
While in Switzerland, we wished it was warm when we went up the Jungfraujoch (Top of Europe). We were up at 11, 782 ft where the temperature was 11 degC with a windspeed of 28 km/h. It was in the middle of June but it definitely wasn't warm up there. You can see more of our visit HERE
Even though it was summer time, we brought our winter jackets trip for this day trip to Jungfraujoch. It helped to keep us warm the entire excursion.

Munich Then and Now

I will be talking about a part of my family's Europe summer vacation which I blogged about before and my summer vacation to Munich when I was 15 years old for my entry to Lola's Cabin Fever Margaritaville Carnival. (You can find the links to some of my Europe vacation posts on the left sidebar)
building in Marienplatz but I couldn't find it, so this will do. I fell in love with Germany especially the Bavarian countryside with its' green rolling hills and picturesque villages and houses. I even had my first taste of french fries in Munich. That's why until now, I eat my french fries with mayonaisse, just like the Europeans. :o)
Fast forward 23 years later. When our vacation was still in the planning stage, I told my husband about my wish to go back to Munich. He agreed and I added it to the list of cities we will visit. On the last week of June, I finally fullfilled my dream of going back to Munich. This time, I was with my own family. We were on our last leg of the month-long tour, after visiting 6 other countries. It felt awesome going back and seeing it from a different perspective.
I had fun touring the city with dh and my kids, going to the most famous beer hall in the world, HofBrauhaus and the restaurant Ratzkeller. Walking around the city brought back memories. It was great seeing my kids enjoy the Deutsches Museum (Science and Tecnology museum) just as I did when I was younger. I also took home the ultimate Bavarian souvenir, a limited edition authentic Black Forest cuckoo clock which you can see here.

"Best Pig Ever" - Anthony Bourdain

That's a direct quote from Anthony Bourdain. The No Reservations episode that I've been waiting for years finally was shown last night on the Travel channel. I've been watching this show for years and even blogged about it here. Tony Bourdain has been all over Asia except the Philippines. I was ecstatic when I read from Market Manila, a foodie blog, that the show just finished filming in Cebu. The blogger, Market Man, had the honor of preparing a sumptuous feast of Filipino food including Lechon (roast pig).
I
n the show, Tony B. went to Manila, Pampanga and Cebu. He tried fish balls, Pancit Malabon, Pinakbet, Shrimp Adobo, Crab with coconut milk, Pinapaitan, Sinigang and Sisig. He loved Sisig, he couldn't stop praising how good and delicious it is. When he was in Cebu, Market Man hired the best Lechon roaster in the island. This guy clearly is one of the best if not the best since the lechon was perfectly roasted. They tasted the Lechon skin and you can literally hear the crackling of the skin when they bite onto it. No wonder it's the best pig ever, according to Tony B. He even blogged about it here where he said that the Philippines has the #1 spot on the best roast pig. #2 and 3 is Bali, Indonesia and Puerto Rico respectively.

Check My New Ride
Uh, in my dreams that is. LOL What do you think about this new car? It's called Aptera 2e and is currently in production. They already received 4000 deposits for this car. If you want to get one for yourself, better send in your deposit. The cost is not determined yet but it will be between $25,000 - $40,000. It is an electric car which you can charge from your home outlet (110-volt). It's supposed to run about 100 miles with a full charge.
This is just a prototype. I don't know what the final body will look like. I hope it's going to look like a regular car, not like a car that looks like it came out of a Jetson's movie. LOL It's a great concept, no gas, just electricity. If they will have a regular car body on the same engine, then I'm sure dh will get one. Right now he's driving a Honda Civic Hybrid and he saves $ on gas. So what do you think? Will you get one for yourself if the car looks exactly like this?

PhotoHunt #8 - Nautical

This week's PhotoHunt theme is nautical. Here are some photos of some ships and a boat from our vacation in The Netherlands.

The photos above were taken in a place called Madurodam near The Hague. It is an amusement park that is filled with miniature buildings and scenes from all over The Netherlands. The Maduro family wanted to honor their deceased son George, who died as a prisoner in Dachau so they built this miniature city.
This last photo is of the coastal tourist town called Volendam located in the northern part of the country.

19 Years - Part 3
You can read part 1 here and part 2 here. I have to apologize for not posting this last year. It's been sitting in my draft folder for quite some time. The reason why I have not posted this part is because I don't know if I should end my story here or continue and write about this other guy I dated many years later. I still have not decided if ever I'm going to write the rest since that would be like reliving a not so happy part of my life but I promised that I will at least write part 3, so here it is.
I just got home from school that day (I was taking extra courses in San Francisco) when the phone rang. It was my brother calling from the Philippines. He said that J has been in a terrible car accident. I thought "OMG!" I asked him what happened and my brother proceeded to tell me the details. After learning what happened, my first thought was 'How can he be so stupid?!' Apparently, J was out drinking with his friends and on the way home, he was drag racing with his friend along EDSA, somewhere around Crossing. The car hit the wall of the underpass and was totaled. I don't know how long he was in the hospital and what the extent of his injuries were. You would think that this brought us back together, but it didn't. I didn't call him or sent him a card. I knew that when I broke up with him, it needs to be final with no communication at all, so I stood my ground. It was hard but it had to be done. If I reached out to him during that time, I would probably be pulled back in. I went on with my new life here in the US and did not even went back to the Philippines for a vacation.
I learned years later that J married someone who looks a lot like me. A neighbor saw them walking and she thought that it was me and J. (Altogether now "awwww". LOL) I think of him sometimes and wonder how he's doing. I hear about him from my mom since she's friends with Tita R (his mom). My aunt even stayed in J's house when she and her friends went to Orlando. Yes, he lives in the same country now. (here's the part where you say "Ooohhhh" LOL) From what I've heard, his wife is the nagger type and I feel bad for him. As for me, I am blessed with a wonderful husband so I did choose the right path.
What would I say if ever I see him? I don't know, maybe "I'm sorry. I hope you're as happy as I am."? What do you say in times like this? Have you ever been in a situation where you come across an ex many years later? What happened?

A New Header for My Food Blog
Earlier today, I had this idea to make a header for my food blog. I'm using a generic template from Blogger Buster so it's just a title and description. Since it's my food blog, what better header to make than showcase some photos of the recipes I shared. So here is my new header, what do you think? I wish I can put all the yummy photos on it but there's just no space.
I'm getting tons of hits from Google for my food blog. I'm so happy since a lot of my recipes are in page 1 of Google search. yay! I just wish Google will give my food blog a page rank. I know, wishful thinking. The most searched for recipe is Pancit Palabok (a kind of Filipino vermicelli type rice noodles with shrimp sauce). Once in a while I'll get a comment from a visitor that they tried my recipe and loved it. There was a guy who said that his wife was surprised he was able to cook Pancit Palabok and it turned out very good. This is one of the reason why I keep on doing it. Can you tell I love to cook? :o)

-----Read Full Post-----The Octuplet's Mom
I saw this piece on Good Morning
America where they have the interview with the grandmother of the octuplets. I'm sure you all know about this news story since it's all over the place. I feel bad for the grandmother. She said that she has been the primary caregiver of the other six children that her daughter (Nadya Suleman) already had, one of which has Autism. According to her, Nadya has not given her monetary support for the children. She and her husband talked to the doctor before the implant and asked him not to do it since their daughter already has six children and no means of support. They showed pictures of the house and it's already crowded! I think that this person, Nadya Suleman has some screws missing up there. She has no job and is on permanent disability which means the state is giving her money. She already received about $165K. She obviously is just thinking of herself. She didn't even think of the risks involved in multiple births like cerebral palsy and other health problems. So aside from the cost of the fertility treatments, where did she spend the money since she hasn't contributed to her children's care? It could be that she spent it on plastic surgery. Uhuh, you read that right. They showed photos of her on GMA and she doesn't look the same. It's obvious that she's had a lot of surgery done on her face. I remember they talked about this in one TV show, they said it seems like she's trying to look like Angelina Jolie. Couldn't this story get more bizarre?
What To Give a Tween?
My daughter is now a tween. I think tween years is between 10 and 12 years old. The age where they're not a kid anymore but they're not a teenager either. It's an awkward stage I think. I remember when I was at this stage, I didn't want to wear little girl clothes anymore but my mom said I'm too young to wear teen clothes. Another problem at this stage is buying gifts. What do you get kids this age? They don't play with dolls although my daughter does not want to part with her toys. When my daughter gets invited to her classmates' birthday parties, I get this problem on what gifts to buy. Since I volunteer in the library where I see her and her classmates, I usually ask what they want for their birthday or what they're into. Sometimes, I opt to buy craft kits like scrapbooking and rubber stamp kits. For boys, maybe some Pokemon cards if they're into that or some Bakugan toys. How about lotions and body sprays? Any ideas on what gifts to give tweens?

Google Analytics, Bounce Rate, etc
While dropping ECs, I read some posts where people complain about their blogs' high bounce rate. I didn't know what they were talking about so I turned to Google of course. I discovered Google Analytics and I'm still learning how it all works. If blogging is just a hobby for you, then the data collected by Google Analytics is not that important. If blogging is your business and a source of income, then I suggest you read up on it. You'll also learn about conversion rate optimization or CRO, the art and science of persuading your site visitors to take actions that benefit you, by making a purchase, offering a donation, or subscribing to a newsletter. You should also check out Google Webmaster Central, it has a lot of tools you can use for your blog.

Here is the rule:
List 5 reasons why I think that Life is Grand and then pass it on to 5 people.
Life is grand because:
1. I have a healthy family: wonderful husband, awesome kids, ipods, a nice home with a white picket fence, and a dog. Oh wait, scratch the dog and the picket fence. I got carried away. LOL
2. Dh still has a job.
5. Some low-life hit my SUV on the front passenger door which left a large dent. $@#&*!!! Whoever it is didn't leave a note with their info. Life is still (kinda) grand because I'm just putting everything in perspective. At least it's just a dent and it wasn't a major accident where someone got hurt. (But whoever it was, will have to deal with bad KARMA for sure.)

PhotoHunt #8 - Bridges (of Venice)

Venice is probably one of the cities if not the only city in the world that has a lot of bridges. Since it is composed of 126 islands and separated by about 200 canals, it has a lot of bridges and boy let me tell you, it is a lot! I read somewhere that it is connected by about 450 bridges. For this week's Photohunt, I'm posting a number of bridges I photographed in Venice last summer. I photographed a lot of bridges in all seven countries we visited but I have to keep this post short. I used up most of the system memory in my notebook from the more than a thousand photos I accumulated.
This next bridge is one of two that is next to our hotel. It just goes to the yellow house on the left. This is an example of the small bridges around Venice. You cannot go anywhere without crossing a bridge or two.

This bridge is the famous 'Bridge of Sighs'. It was made in the 16th century and connects the Palazzo Ducale aka Doge's palace with the prison cells. It is made of white limestone. It was named the Bridge of Sighs by Lord Byron in the 20th century. The prisoners after sentencing, crosses the bridge and had their last look out the window in the bridge before being imprisoned in the dungeon with no outside windows.

This is what the inside of the Bridge of Sighs look like. It is very narrow. You can see part of the window at the right side. The view is of the pedestrian bridge on the other side and the Grand Canal waters. You need to go into the Doge's palace to go to through the Bridge of Sighs.

This is one of our last memories of Venice. We just passed the large bridge in the background, one of the many that crosses the Grand Canal. This was taken from the water taxi on our way to the train station. I never thought that I would fall in love with Venice, but I did. I'm glad that we made it a part of our Europe trip last year. It is a magical and beautiful place. You should go and see it for yourself.

That Darn Accent
*sigh* What is it with cute men and accents? I've been an avid watcher of Top Chef for years now that if I probably tasted every dish that has been cooked by the contestants, I would have to look for the best weight loss pills. Every time that chef Eric Ripert of Le Bernardin (considered the BEST seafood restaurant in the USA) is in the episode, my heart flutters. LOL It helps too that he's handsome but boy oh boy. When he opens his mouth and starts speaking...oh la la cuchi cuchi! And that boyish smile...*sigh* What is it with the French language? It definitely sound beautiful, no wonder it's been labeled the language of love. My first exposure to French was actually from a skunk. You remember, from the cartoons, I think his name is Pepe Le Pew or something like that. :o) I also remember this Australian chef named Curtis Stone - cute with an accent.

1st Blog Anniversary
Happy 1st Anniversary to my blog! yay! It was a year ago when I made my first post. It was titled 'I'm Lost with Lost' and I talked about my frustrations with the tv show Lost. My first commenter is Carlota of My Web-Log Designs. :o) I'd like to thank Amy of Kalidadis and Lanie of I Thought So for convincing me to go back to blogging. *wink* I owe you some tuba and danggit. LOL
Anyway, I was thinking of ways to celebrate this anniversary. After hearing about the headache that comes with organizing a huge contest, I decided to have a giveaway each month. I'm still deciding on what it will be, probably a gift card, cash or promotional items. Watch out for the details. I promise it's going to be easy and you don't have to jump hoops to join. LOL
Btw, hats off to the Cardinals for playing a good game yesterday. I'm glad they rallied and tried to win the Superbowl. It was close but no cigar. :o( Congratulations to the Steelers. :o)
Try Equestrian Cupid to Find Your Partner
I've tried my hand at matchmaking countless times. Well, actually, I only did it for my best friend and for my cousin but it did seem like hundreds for all my efforts. I don't know if I'm bad at it or they are both not open for a relationship. I try to convince myself that it's the latter to protect my ego. LOL
One of the important things to consider in matchmaking is that both parties should share at least one common interest. It's easy if you are into football or other popular sport like baseball. But what if you are into horse riding? This is considered an elite sport and you might have a hard time looking for a partner who is into the same thing. You should consider joining this online dating site called equestrian cupid. All members in this dating community share the same interests like yours. How's that for an ice-breaker? You won't even have the problem of choosing what to do on your dates. Equestrian Cupid have a FREE sign-up and you get a Guest Membership. This will allow you to make a personal profile and upload your photos. Your profile will be visible to Gold Members and other Guest Members and you will also be able to view other profiles. So if you are single and into riding and horses, try this dating site's free guest membership and see what it has to offer.

A lucky person will get this artwork at the end of the month. There will also be five runners-up who will receive signed limited edition prints of the painting.
I'm going to have to gather all my lucky stars, rabbit foot, lucky coin and what not and hope for the best. :o) For contest rules, please visit John Wright Art.
